Sunday Times Review of “II”

“Last month Electric Penguins settled long running band differences. Now the remaining group, Paul Murphy and Mark Cummins, has re-released its second album, II, almost a year after its initial launch. From the opening track, the Pink Floyd-inspired Minutes, to the punchy pop of Airships Fly Over Beaches With Godetias, the band perfects a sound that sits as comfortably in the psychedelic as with folk, rock, ambient and electronica. A soft mushy side even seeps through in the caressing tones of Always, Always, which has just piano and vocals for support.”

‘Airships’ Single and Album Re-Release
New single release and Album re-release
Friday 9th September 2011
Digital single: “Airships Fly Over Beaches With Godetias”
Under the influence of vintage German electronica and dreamy folk-pop, Electric Penguins are proud to present their new single “Airships Fly Over Beaches With Godetias”, the third from their newly re-released album “II”. Rolling Stone magazine photographer Robert Altman kindly lends 60′s vibes to the new single with a reproduction of one of his classic images from Hippie Hill, San Francisco, 1967.
Touted as ‘Synth Act Of The Year’ by Hot Press, the Penguins talents were recently heard on Channel 4 series “Sounds From The Cities” having performed its score and theme music. In addition, critical praise for the group’s album has come in the form of airplay from radio tastemakers such as 2FM’s Dan Hegarty, Newstalk’s Tom Dunne, Today FM’s Paul McLoone and Dublin’s indie station Phantom FM. Indeed “II” was among Dan Hegarty’s Top 10 albums of the year.
Available on CD and as a lovingly prepared double vinyl, the 12 track feast of psychedelic cuts slides dreamily between electronic, folk and ambient soundscapes with acoustic and club elements dispersed throughout the record. Whirly and trippy audio effects, vocoders, moogs, mellotrons, organs, deeply layered strings and naked pianos mash and mix to maximise melody. Amongst the delights featured are the folksy love song to London, “Highgate Hill” and the kraut-club inspired combo-track “Airships/Soundproof 45″.
Electric Penguins “II” (Talking Tiger Records, TTCD001 / TTLP001) & the single “Airships Fly Over Beaches With Godetias” (TTCDS003) will be available from September 9th.

Bella Union chief plays the Penguins
Check out Simon Raymonde’s ‘Beneath The Surface’ show on StrangewaysRadio.com tonight at 6pm where the Cocteau Twins member and Bella Union label boss will feature Electric Penguins.
“Beneath The Surface is a trawl through Simon’s out of control record collection, and a sharp reminder of how much incredible music exists that most people simply never even hear about.”
So shall it be tweeted, so shall it be done….
